State judge blocks evidence from Luigi Mangione backpack in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder case
Mangione, 28, is accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Midtown sidewalk in December 2024.
Public officials condemned the brazen killing, but it became emblematic of many Americans’ antipathy for health insurance industry practices and rising costs.
It includes the alleged murder weapon, a 3D-printed silencer, the fake ID used to check into a Manhattan hostel and journals purported to rail against the health insurance industry.
Judge Gregory Carro’s decision, five months after he held a hearing to examine how police came upon the items, is a major win for prosecutors, enabling them to show the jury a possible murder weapon and evidence they say points to motive.
