According to De Telegraf, a Dutch media, Ukraine might soon get 60 artillery systems called Gepard. These were originally bought by the US from Jordan for Ukraine’s use.
These systems were originally made in Germany and were sold by the Netherlands to Jordan in 2013, generating €21 million from the transaction.
The Dutch army completed the sale of the final 60th system in 2016. Now, the US has chosen to acquire 60 tracked vehicles for €110 million to send them to Ukraine. The outlet suggests that Ukraine could receive the initial batch of Gepards soon.
The Ukrainian military is effectively employing self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAG) to intercept and shoot down Russian drones. This strategic use helps conserve expensive ammunition for dedicated air defense systems like Patriot and IRIS-T, which are specifically designed for anti-missile defense.
In the early summer, it came to light that the American company Global Military Products secured a contract worth over US $118 million to procure and deliver Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft systems for Ukraine. Subsequent reports indicated that the implementation of the agreement would take place in Amman, Jordan, with an estimated completion deadline of May 30, 2024.
