The U.S. expects that Iran and its proxy forces could carry out a combined strike against Israel.
Bloomberg sources reported that the targets of the strikes could be military and government facilities. The attack is expected to take place soon. One of the interlocutors emphasized that it is a question of “when, not if.”
Western intelligence is not sure if the proposed attack would come from Lebanon, where Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian group, has a lot of influence. It is also unclear whether the attack would lead to a larger conflict. It is worth noting that so far Iran has not struck Israel.
The reason for the alleged attack could be a strike on Damascus. Tehran suspects Israeli involvement, although Tel Aviv has not officially claimed responsibility.
The strike on Damascus killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior IRGC commander who commanded the al-Quds Special Forces in Lebanon and Syria. Zahedi was known for his involvement in operations against Israel.
His death was assessed by the Times of Israel as the IRGC’s most significant loss since the death of Gen. Qasem Suleimani, who was killed in Iraq in a U.S. strike in 2020.
