HAMAS tunnel directly under UN agency building – IDF statement

Israeli military forces reported identifying a Hamas tunnel under the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza.

Israeli military forces reported identifying a Hamas tunnel under the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza.

As The Times of Israel notes, the 700-meter tunnel was used by terrorists as an intelligence center.

The Israeli military said that servers, industrial batteries, and other equipment were found at a depth of 20 meters. The operation also uncovered living quarters and weapons stores. The location of the tunnel was determined thanks to intelligence obtained from interrogations of captured Hamas fighters.

Reuters reported that the IDF led a group of journalists through the tunnel, familiarizing them with some of the rooms. A lieutenant colonel, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared with the agency that the tunnel was a key Hamas command center from which most combat operations were directed.

The head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, released a statement on Twitter that the organization “was not aware of the existence of a tunnel under its headquarters in Gaza.” According to the official, they learned of its existence after media reports.

Previously, the country accused UNRWA of supporting Hamas. According to intelligence data, 190 employees of the organization participated in the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7.
