Supreme Court reinstates conviction in 1979 Etan Patz murder
The justices, by a 6-3 vote, granted an appeal from New York prosecutors who had urged them to undo a federal appeals court decision that overturned the verdict.
Patz disappeared on the morning of May 25, 1979, the first time his parents allowed him to walk by himself to his bus stop about a block away from his home in SoHo.
The three liberal justices — Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson — noted their objection to the majority’s order.
Etan was one of the first missing children ever to appear on milk cartons, and the anniversary of his disappearance became National Missing Children’s Day
