China wants Trump to embrace its vision of peace for Taiwan
The de facto independent nation of 23 million people has spent decades living under threat from the Chinese Communist Party, which claims Taiwan as its territory despite never having ruled it for even a day.
That’s raising dread among Taiwan’s supporters that Trump will agree to rethink a foundation of U.S.-Taiwan defense ties in exchange for a successful summit with China’s leader XI JINPING.
When President Trump meets his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, Taiwan is almost certainly going to come up.
While Taiwan’s government considers itself the head of a de facto sovereign state, Beijing views the island as an inalienable part of its territory.
