Xi's 1st 'act of war' on USA stuns Trump: Taiwan flashpoint erupts as POTUS mulls $14000000000 aid
US and Taiwanese presidents have not spoken directly since Washington shifted diplomatic recognition to Beijing from Taipei in 1979.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when such a call might happen or what would be discussed.
The move would break over four decades of protocol and be an affront to China.
China considers Taiwan its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under Beijing’s control.
