US Visa Crackdown Explained: Why More Than 175,000 Visas Have Been Revoked

The announcement comes less than two years since Trump started his second term.

Biden's State Department revoked approximately 40,000 visas in 2024 – less than half the 100,000 revocations under Trump's first year back in office as his administration continues its aggressive immigration enforcement and screening campaign.

The extent of the revocations reflects the broad immigration crackdown initiated when Trump returned to the White House last year, deporting an unprecedented number of migrants including some who held valid visas.

Assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug offences were among the most common reasons for revocations.
