US removes Syria from state sponsor of terrorism list
The removal, posted on the U.S. Treasury’s website, took effect after a 45-day congressional review period triggered when President Donald Trump formally notified Congress on July 8 of his intention to rescind the designation.
The decision marks the latest sign of warming ties between Washington and Damascus since the December 2024 takeover of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, a former Islamist militant chief who was also a U.S.-designated terrorist until the label was rescinded in July 2025 ahead of his first visit to the White House later that year.
The U.S. on Monday formally removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after 47 years, clearing a major obstacle to American investment and trade with the war-torn country as President Donald Trump deepens ties with its new government.
