US-Iran Deal: Trump Sees Israel as Biggest Obstacle to Peace Agreement
President Donald Trump insisted on signing an agreement with Iran during dinner at Versailles, surprising his host and aides.
Iran’s new supreme leader appears to have handed responsibility for the deal over to President Masoud Pezeshkian, a relative moderate, who is now under fire from a more hardline camp that believes war with the US could restart soon.
So he spent tens of billions of dollars, and upended the global economy, only to sign a memorandum of understanding undoubtedly weaker than any deal he could have struck before the war.
The vacuum created by the invisibility of Iran’s injured supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, makes this moment something of an interregnum.
