UN’s worrying forecast: Earth on track to break heat record again
The world’s oceans have reached their highest average surface temperature on record, as El Niño continues to strengthen and could reach historic levels.
Warmer oceans can have wide-reaching consequences, including supercharging extreme weather, raising sea levels and harming marine life.
Jane Lubchenco, an oceanographer and former chief of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the record “very troubling.”
The average surface temperature was 21.1C, with the rising marine heat a stark indicator of the climate crisis.
