Trump administration pauses construction of border wall through Big Bend National Park

Border crossings in the area have historically been lower than other regions and have dropped even further over the past two years.

Located in southern Texas, the development has drawn strong opposition from across the political spectrum, with critics arguing that it damages the region's unspoiled wilderness.

Congress gave the Trump administration $46bn last summer to build a wall from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, and the administration has been racing ahead and waiving numerous regulations in an effort to swiftly build the wall.

The Department of Homeland Security plans to build vehicle barriers, patrol roads, lighting and detection technology across the park, known for its spectacular views and rich biodiversity, including hundreds of bird species, bobcats and black bears.
