Federal law has long been understood to prohibit living people from appearing on most US currency.
The final design for the commemorative coin to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump.
The back depicts the “Great Seal” of the U.S.—a bald eagle holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in another—with the number “250” integrated into it.
