The European Union has expressed readiness to grant Armenia candidate status, provided the country shows interest and implements the necessary reforms to obtain candidate status in the EU. The relevant resolution was published on the official website of the European Parliament.
The document states that Armenia’s readiness to carry out reforms strengthening the foundations of democracy and willingness to apply for candidate status can become the basis for starting the process of transformation in the relations between the EU and Armenia.
The resolution was approved by a majority of votes in the European Parliament: 504 MPs were in favor, 4 against, 32 abstained.
The text also calls on the EU authorities to support Armenia in deepening cooperation with the EU in various areas, including security.
Earlier, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said that Armenia is studying the possibility of applying for EU membership amid difficult relations with Russia.
