Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship in Blow to Trump
US President Donald Trump had issued an executive order that would have changed constitutional guarantees that people born on US soil are citizens.
The ruling was led by Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the court’s opinion striking down the executive order, with Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson joining his decision.
The case is the court’s most closely watched culture war dispute this year and the ruling comes amid a political and legal backlash against trans Americans in conservative states.
The decision comes on the final day of a Supreme Court term that has centered on Trump’s expansive claims of presidential power — and largely ruled in his favor.
