South American athlete Oscar Pistorius spent nine years in prison. He served more than half of his 13-year sentence, so the parole board granted his application. Pistorius will now remain in his home under police supervision.

Until his sentence expires in 2029, he will be banned from leaving Pretoria, talking to the press and leaving the house during certain hours.

The Paralympian was originally convicted of manslaughter, but the court eventually decided the offence was premeditated.

Context: According to the investigation, Pistorius shot his girlfriend Rina Steenkamp through the toilet door in the house, firing four shots. He himself claimed that he heard a noise and thought it was a burglar. The prosecution insisted that the murder was premeditated, and Pistorius had previously shown a tendency to unmotivated aggression. It also emerged that he had quarrelled with Steenkamp shortly before the tragedy. The trial against Pistorius lasted 1.5 years.
