Serbian war criminal Ratko Mladic to be buried with 'state honours'
He had been serving a life sentence for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity – crimes whose “seriousness” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres restated after his death on Thursday.
He died a week after the U.N. rejected his latest request for release on humanitarian grounds.
To most of the world, he was and will always be the “Butcher of Bosnia”, a grim epithet but one that still fails to fully convey the evil and horror inflicted on its people by Gen Ratko Mladić, who died in prison on Thursday.
He died at 84 in UN detention at The Hague after being convicted of genocide for the 1995 massacre of at least 8,000 Muslim prisoners in Srebrenica inside the UN-designated “safe area” of Bosnia, during the Balkans war of the early 1990s
