Powerful 7.4 quake hits Mexico coast near Guatemala, triggers tsunami warning
The earthquake's offshore location and shallow depth placed it within a seismically active stretch of Mexico's Pacific coastline, a region where the Cocos tectonic plate subducts beneath the North American plate, producing some of the country's most significant seismic activity.
The tremor was felt in Guatamala and El Salvador
The tremor occurred at a shallow depth, a factor that typically amplifies the intensity of shaking and expands the area where it can be felt.
It struck Puerto Madero, a port and fishing town roughly eight miles from the Guatemalan border, and measured a depth of 6.21 miles.
