Ortega: Nicaragua Will No Longer Hold Elections
Central American nation’s long-time leader vows US-backed parties will ‘never again’ take power
Ortega, Nicaragua’s longest-serving leader, has remained in power since 2007 after previously governing during the 1980s.
In power since 2007 following elections questioned by the international community, the 80-year-old Marxist framed the move as a way to block the opposition, which he asserted is controlled by the United States.
Ortega made the announcement on Sunday during the official ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista revolution, in which he helped overthrow the brutal dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza.
