The final opinion polls show a tightening race between Labour’s Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon.
Burnham has circled a potential seat near Manchester for months.
At one level, the contest is typical, with many candidates focused on hyperlocal issues including garbage disposal, potholes and money for schools.
The by-election was triggered last month when the previous MP, Josh Simons, stood down to allow Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the seat.
