Medvedev stunned by wildcard Walton in French Open first round
Filipina finishes unremarkable clay season in singles with defeat at Roland Garros
The 17-year-old Frenchman Moise Kouame became the youngest man to win a match at Roland Garros since 1991 as the teenage wildcard defeated former US Open champion Marin Cilic in straight sets on his first appearance at a grand slam tournament.
The Queenslander lost his previous four matches against top-10 opponents, but he credited his three-set victory over Medvedev – then ranked 15th – at last year’s Cincinnati Masters for fuelling his belief he could match it with the former world No.1.
Medvedev had arguably been one of the most in-form top-10 players on the clay coming into Roland Garros, outside of Jannik Sinner.
