The eruption began Saturday night and was the fourth in the last 120 days. Scientists are monitoring the volcano
Iceland’s meteorological office said the eruption created a fissure about 2 miles (3 kilometers) long between the Stora Skogfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes peninsula, AP reported.

The local population has been warned of new eruption risks. On March 17, hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon spa, one of Iceland’s top tourist attractions.

Scientists are monitoring the volcano and believe the eruption appears to be weakening and is likely to cease within hours.
