Hungary’s president signs law change ending his term in office

An ally of former PM Viktor Orban has signed a constitutional amendment ending his own term as head of state.

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has agreed to step down, signing an amendment to the country's constitution which will end his presidency at midnight on Sunday.

The legislation was part of Magyar's drive to dismantle former prime minister Viktor Orban's bastions of power, for which Magyar says he received a strong mandate from voters after ousting the right-wing leader in an April election landslide.

But after a constitutional amendment designed to remove Sulyok from office passed on Monday, the Orbán-appointed president’s legal options narrowed sharply.
