According to Der Spiegel, the head of the German Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, has ordered the preparation of proposals to restore compulsory military service. According to closed government documents cited by the publication, Pistorius intends to seek the return of conscription before the elections to the Bundestag, which will be held in the fall of 2025. The relevant proposals, according to Pistorius’ order, should be prepared by April 1.
Germany suspended compulsory military conscription in 2011 and switched to professional troops.
