On Saturday night, an unidentified airplane was spotted in the skies over Germany without contacting air traffic controllers. It entered German airspace from Lithuania. Two Eurofighter supersonic fighters of the Luftwaffe’s tactical squadron in Neuburg am Danube were raised on alert.
According to the military pilots, they approached the plane from Lithuania as close as possible and made eye contact with the pilot. The pilot explained that there had been a loss of communication. He changed course and the fighters escorted him to Polish airspace.
Residents of Bavaria and Thuringia, over which the aerial operation took place, called the police en masse, reporting rumbling in the sky and shaking windows. One man even complained that the sudden noise had caused him to spill his beer.
