German companies will be checked for compliance with sanctions because of their activities in the occupied regions of Ukraine

Construction work in a Ukrainian city that was almost completely destroyed and occupied by Russia “only serves Russian propaganda,” the German Foreign Ministry said.

An investigation by German TV channel ARD was released this week, alleging that at least two companies from Germany – Knauf and WKB Systems – were supplying building materials to Mariupol.

In particular, Knauf cement is allegedly used on construction sites in Russian-occupied Mariupol.

Every company that takes part in this “should ask itself to whom and what service it is doing,” the Tagesschau newspaper quoted a German foreign ministry spokesman as saying.

The German Economy Ministry also added that customs and prosecutors should check whether German companies violated sanctions against Russia by supplying their products to occupied Mariupol.

After the investigation, the management of German Knauf said that the company “condemns Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and complies with all EU sanctions against Russia”. However, despite this statement, German police will check for violations of international sanctions against Russia.
