French teen social media ban struck down by top constitutional authority

France’s highest court on Friday rejected the government’s move to ban people under 15 from using social media, a stinging setback to President Emmanuel Macron, who has made the measure a centerpiece of his legislative agenda in his final year in office.

France’s Constitutional Council has blocked a bill that would have banned social media access for under-15s, ruling that it infringed on freedom of expression.

Macron had hoped to implement a ban in September in time for an expected announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of EU-wide measures.
