French MPs back assisted dying despite government’s jitters
PARIS — French lawmakers voted on Wednesday to legalize assisted dying for terminally ill patients, bringing to an end a fraught, months-long process that sowed deep divisions within every political camp.
France has an increasingly aging population, with growing numbers of patients who require care for chronic illnesses.
Only people whose physical condition prevents them from doing so would be allowed to receive assistance from a doctor or a nurse.
The legislation, however, will still face review by the Constitutional Council after Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu requested the country's highest constitutional authority to examine it once passed.
