Fjord wins Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival
At a 79th Cannes Film Festival that saw few films break out, Fjord found wide admiration for its engrossing tale of what Mungiu called “left-wing fundamentalism”.
The acclaimed filmmaker, previously honored for his 2007 abortion drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, now joins an elite group of just ten directors to have received Cannes’ top prize twice.
Fjord, a thought-provoking drama about domestic violence and left-wing prejudices by Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu, won the best film prize at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 23, at a star-packed closing ceremony.
A slightly muted festival, the 79th edition was marked by a number of disappointing returns from assorted auteurs, as well as a distinct absence of Hollywood glitz.
