Fear grips Haitian communities after Supreme Court ruling unwinds protection from deportation

Justice Sonia Sotomayor took the unusual step of reading her dissent in the case of Mullin v. Doe in which the carefully manufactured conservative majority virtually eliminated the Temporary Protected Status program.

The decision in Mullin v. Doe overturns lower court orders that had blocked the administration from rapidly unwinding protections for around 350,000 Haitians and 6,100 Syrians—handing it a significant win in its ongoing push for greater de-documentation powers.

She felt like she needed to prepare for death — in case she gets deported back to Haiti, a country she fled at 9 years old.

TPS was developed by Congress in 1990 and aims to help people who can’t stay in their home country due to armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters or other dire conditions.
