EU to Unlock €16.4 Billion of Aid to Hungary in Win for Magyar
Magyar pushes for breakthrough to secure frozen EU funds
Péter Magyar trumpeted his meeting with Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels as a breakthrough — but Hungary is still a long way from receiving the billions of euros in EU funds that Budapest wants.
Reforms under new Prime Minister Peter Magyar will enable the EU to free up billions in frozen assistance for Budapest.
Partly by campaigning on forging stronger ties with the European Union, Magyar's earthquake success in the April election ended the 16-year rule of Viktor Orbán, who had vilified von der Leyen and other powerbrokers in the 27-nation bloc as he hollowed out institutional checks and balances in Hungary.
