China Signals It Will Accept Trump’s Push to Rebuild Tariff Wall
Despite six meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping during U.S. President Donald Trump's three-day stay (May 13-15), no substantial breakthrough was made for the bilateral relationship.
The world's two top economies spent much of 2025 embroiled in an escalating trade war, until the two leaders reached a one-year truce when they met in South Korea in October.
The commitment would take Chinese imports of U.S. agriculture back towards all-time highs, but fulfilling it would likely require Beijing to drop its tariffs imposed during the trade war.
The Trump-Xi summit was long on well-choreographed pageantry and symbolism, short on measurable results.
