Canada in Talks to Acquire Saab Spy Planes, PM Carney Says
Canada has announced plans to buy a fleet of early warning planes from Sweden’s Saab rather than a competing option from Boeing, as the country seeks to reduce reliance on US defence firms.
That ended Canada’s persistent failure to meet NATO’s minimum military spending target of two percent of gross domestic product.
Canada has entered into talks to buy Saab’s GlobalEye early warning jets, which are based on Canadian-made Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft.
Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail plane – which has suffered from delays and cost overruns – had also been in contention.
