Anthropic calls for global AI slowdown, says systems may outpace human control

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has suggested a global pause on building the most powerful AI systems as the latest models are beginning to show signs they could escape human control.

Already, Anthropic's popular chatbot Claude is operating on code of which 80% the system wrote itself.

That is likely to create a feedback loop in which AI systems create even more sophisticated successors.

Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark explains a need for an option to pause or slow AI advancement, as the technology could eventually build newer versions of itself, with enormous implications for the world.
