Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began an unexpected tour of the Baltic states today, seeking solidarity from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. He is scheduled to meet with senior leaders from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in the next few days to discuss urgent security matters, the Ukrainian war, and Ukraine’s integration into NATO and the EU.
Zelensky visited Vilnius first, where he held meetings with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonīte. During a press conference, they announced the signing of several agreements. Lithuania has pledged to provide €200 million to Ukraine for reform and defence assistance, and they will also work together on a drone development and production project.
President Nauseda stated that Lithuania will send ammunition and generators to Kiev in January, M577 armored personnel carriers in February, and will train Ukrainian soldiers.
Ukraine is in a long-standing conflict with the occupants and requires the support of its Western allies. The Baltic states themselves have faced Russian aggression and have been strong supporters of Ukraine on the international stage.
