The country expects to receive alternative weapons from allies.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said that the country could provide Ukraine with a Patriot air defense system only in exchange for similar weapons from its allies. Digi24 reports that statement.
Iohannis stressed that he did not want to discuss the possibility of transferring Patriot publicly, preferring to solve this issue with military experts and the Supreme National Defense Council.
The president explained that the transfer of the Patriot system is a complex process with many logistical and legal problems. He stressed that he did not want the transfer of air defense systems to Ukraine to lead to a weakening of Romania’s air and missile defense.
“Thus, if Romania eventually concedes something, it must get something else. Otherwise, nothing will be done,” the president emphasized.
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister said Kyiv is working on getting four Patriot systems from allies.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged the allies to support Ukraine more actively, especially in strengthening its air defense: “I would like to take this opportunity to ask our European friends to take another look at their stockpiles to see whether they can also do something in this respect to support Ukraine’s air defense,” the chancellor said.
