The situation at Zaporizhzhia NPP is unstable, all seven IAEA nuclear safety pillars are partially or fully violated. This was reported by IAEA Director Grossi, speaking to the agency’s governing board.
“Attacks and frequent disconnections of off-site power lines due to hostilities create a serious situation, which I described to the UN Security Council on April 25 at my seventh such briefing,” Grossi said.
In the same way, Grossi said that IAEA representatives were not allowed to access the nuclear safety critical areas of the ZNPP.
“Since April, all six reactor units have been in cold shutdown mode. This has been recommended by the agency for some time because it improves the overall safety of the facility. The IAEA mission does not get access to some sites of importance for the nuclear safety and physical security of Zaporizhzhia NPP,” the IAEA director general said.
He once again noted that issues related to staffing, regular inspections and maintenance, as well as emergency activities at the site remain complex and pose risks to the nuclear safety and security of the plant.
Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest in Europe. It is now under the control of the Russian occupants.
