Trump returns to rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner months after April shooting

The annual – and perennially controversial – event had originally been held in April, but it was swiftly derailed after a gunman attempted to storm the proceedings in an alleged effort to assassinate United States President Donald Trump.

Trump attended the original dinner in April during the nation’s 250th-anniversary year.

The suspect, Cole Allen, pleaded not guilty in May to charges including attempting ​to assassinate the president.

The first lady was at the annual dinner in April when a gunman rushed through a security checkpoint at The Washington Hilton in an attempt to harm senior members of the Trump administration.
