ICE Suspends Traffic Stops After Two Shooting Deaths
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have reportedly been instructed to no longer perform traffic stops after officers fatally shot two drivers in Texas and Maine within a week.
It marks a major policy shift for the agency, which has faced criticism in the past year over allegations of excessive use of force and scrutiny over deaths that have occurred during its operations.
The policy shift came one day after an ICE officer killed a driver in the coastal Maine town of Biddeford, about 24km (15 miles) south of Portland.
After federal immigration agents fatally shot two US citizens this January, the then-secretary of the Department of Homeland Security pledged to “rapidly” deploy body cameras to officers nationally.
