More than 2,700 deaths linked to UK heatwaves

Temperatures hit 35.1C in West London in May and following three consecutive days of record-breaking temperatures, highs of 37.7C on 26 June at Lingwood, Norfolk were recorded amid numerous red health heat alerts across England.

As a relentless early-summer heatwave pushed temperatures above 41°C (106°F) across Western Europe, millions of people swarmed to unregulated lakes, rivers, and canals to seek relief, resulting in a catastrophic spike in accidental drownings.

Last month's heatwave brought wildfires, rail travel chaos and an increased mortality rate in Germany.

The victims were largely young men, with 40 of them under 30 years old – the biggest group among those whose ages were known.
