Germany sees mass protests around far-right AfD congress
By keeping its shutters down, the Swedish homewares giant bowed to a greater force: the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Thousands of police were deployed to the city, and some were filmed using batons on protesters who ran towards them, while others were captured on camera struggling to hold back crowds of demonstrators.
The weekend convention has drawn additional controversy by coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of a Nazi Party meeting held nearby that consolidated Adolf Hitler’s power over the fascist movement.
Thousands of opponents of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have blocked roads leading to the party’s annual conference ahead of regional elections.
