Three die from suffocation in Mexico City World Cup celebrations
Authorities have not confirmed reports carried by local media about a possible third death.
Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night, with goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez seeing the co-hosts through in what was their first knockout win in 40 years.
The deaths occurred near the Angel of Independence landmark, where thousands of soccer fans had gathered to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 32.
Clara Brugada Molina, head of the city's government, expressed her "most sincere condolences" to the victims' families and pledged support in the coming days.
