European leaders pledge stronger role in NATO before Trump-Rutte talks

What looked like a typical round of President Trump insulting European leaders last weekend could turn into a wholesale reordering of the trans-Atlantic relationship.

Mark Rutte praised President Donald Trump’s actions in Iran as necessary to keep NATO allies safe and addressed the commander-in-chief's disappointment in what he describes as a lack of support from NATO allies.

The summit is preparing to agree a new target of €70bn (£60bn) extra spending for Ukraine over two years, with the sums contributing to the commitment made by individual countries to spend up to a minimum of 5% of GDP on defence by 2035.
