Deadly H5 Bird Flu Spreads Worldwide With Australia Outbreak
An emergency meeting of animal health and agriculture officials in the country has been held to consider a national response
A migratory sea bird tested positive for the contagious H5 variant of bird flu in Western Australia.
Tests taken in WA suggested a sick giant petrel found in the same area was also infected.
It marks the first confirmed case in the Australian mainland of the highly pathogenic strain, which has spread around the world since 2020, causing the deaths of millions of birds and other animals.
