Luigi Mangione’s lawyers withdraw psychiatric defense in CEO murder trial

Many progressives elevated accused killer Luigi Mangione to folk-hero status after he was arrested and accused of gunning down a health insurance executive in cold blood in New York City in late 2024.

Mangione is also facing a federal trial slated for early next year.

If Mangione were to have gone through with the extreme emotional disturbance defense, he would have in effect been admitting that he killed Thompson but did so because of mitigating circumstances.

Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty in both the federal and state cases against him for the fatal shooting of Thompson in midtown Manhattan at the end of 2024.
