Gunshots ring out in Philippines Senate where authorities tried to arrest a senator
Gunshots were heard inside the Philippine Senate on Wednesday night as tensions escalated over attempts to arrest Senator Ronald Dela Rosa under an International Criminal Court warrant.
More than 10 soldiers in camouflage had earlier entered the complex, some carrying assault rifles, though it remained unclear who fired the shots or why troops were deployed.
The chaos comes as one senator faces imminent arrest over an ICC warrant.
The dramatic scene unfolded as Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, former president Rodrigo Duterte's top enforcer during his bloody drug war, holed up in the Senate complex to dodge arrest and transfer to the Netherlands over alleged crimes against humanity.
