Canada expands sanctions against Russia over arms shipments from DPRK

The sanctions are designed to undermine Russia's ability to acquire North Korean weapons.

The sanctions are designed to undermine Russia’s ability to acquire North Korean weapons.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry announced the imposition of sanctions against two individuals and six legal entities from Russia who transported weapons, including ballistic missiles, from the DPRK.

The sanctions list includes in particular the general director of the “224th flight detachment” Vladimir Mikheichik, the general director of the shipping company “Asia” Vladimir Shastin, shipping companies “Asia Shipping” and “MG-flot”.

According to a statement by Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, these individuals and companies are involved in the transportation of military cargo from North Korea to Russia.

“The measures announced today are designed to undermine Russia’s ability to acquire North Korean weapons that are being used to achieve military objectives in a brutal war of aggression against Ukraine,” Canada’s Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

The six organizations are Russian shipping companies that own, manage or operate the aircraft and cargo ships allegedly used for the shipments, and two “high-ranking representatives of Russian entities” have close ties to the Russian military.
