“I will not move from my seat until I feel the hand of my husband in my hand.”
Hanna and Volodymyr are an elderly couple who were crossing the border at the Pokrivka (Ukraine) – Kolotilovka (Russia) border crossing point.
They were returning from the occupied territory in the Kherson region. The woman is blind, the man is almost unable to walk.
In order to cross the two-kilometer pedestrian zone at the border they had to resort to the help of volunteers of the Rapid Response Unit of the Sumy Regional Organization of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine.
Hanna was the first to cross the border zone. The elderly woman was put on an evacuation wheelchair, but she refused to go further, saying that she “will not move until she feels her husband’s hand in her hand”. Volunteers waited right at the crossing for Hanna’s husband, Volodymyr, to cross the border.
“She made sure by groping that it was him, and only then we moved on,” said one of the Red Cross volunteers.
The volunteers were able to capture this moment.
