Kyrgyzstan has adopted a scandalous law on “foreign agents” following the example of Russia.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a law on “foreign representatives” that strengthens control over the activities of non-governmental organizations in the country.
The document obliges NPOs with foreign funding to report on employees’ salaries, sources of funding, and assets of income and expenditures. The requirements apply to NPOs engaged in political activities.
NPOs that are declared “foreign agents” will be required to submit additional reports and may be subject to additional inspections.
The opposition and Western countries criticized this law because it is a direct tool for fighting dissenters. The wording of the law is more than vague, so in Kyrgyzstan, as in Russia, anyone can be declared a “foreign agent”.
