Ahead of the European Council meeting, President Charles Michel has called on its members to strengthen their support for Ukraine and take decisive measures to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities.
In his letter Michel emphasizes that against the background of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, which is now in its third year of challenging the international community, Europe needs to act urgently and decisively.
The main task is the immediate delivery of military aid to Ukraine, including the purchase and delivery of ammunition, as well as the strengthening of sanctions and the use of profits from frozen Russian assets. Michel emphasizes the need to radically increase investment in Europe’s security and defense, noting that fighting in Ukraine is the most serious security threat since World War II.
In addition to global challenges, Michel raises issues related to agriculture in Europe, emphasizing the need to address the problems faced by farmers.
In his address, the president also touches on EU enlargement and the need for reforms, discussing migration policy and foreign relations. The letter concludes with the announcement of the European Summit, which will discuss economic and financial issues, including the deepening of the Union of Markets and Capital.
